Jancis Robinson. Many of you were kind enough to help a team of Zimbabwean sommeliers working in South Africa compete in the World Wine Tasting Championships in Burgundy a year ago. This was the most fabulous experience for them but, although they beat the Italian team, they ended up very close to the bottom scorers.

(…) For example the Chateauneuf du Pape. At the beginning only 15.000 bottles were made. And wine making was a joy, singing, laughing, maybe someone was drunk. Then the wine was sold and life did continue in harmony with Nature. Nowadays the production is 20 millions of bottles, the game doesn’t play. To make 20 millions of bottles wine must be killed. Yes, because wine is alive. It is “the maximum against optimum”.

(…) “Ad esempio, lo Chateauneuf du Pape. All’inizio erano 15 mila bottiglie. E si faceva, si cantava, si rideva, qualcuno magari si ubriacava. Poi si vendeva e la vita continuava in armonia con la Natura. Oggi se non si producono 20 milioni di bottiglie, il gioco non funziona. E per fare 20 milioni di bottiglie si deve uccidere il Vino. - sì, perché il Vino e vivo -. È il maximum sull’optimum”.
